St. Patrick's Day – Celebrating the Green

2nd Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade, Portsmouth Ohio2nd Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade, Portsmouth Ohio

St. Patrick is believed to have driven the snakes from Ireland. Once a pagan himself, St. Patrick is one of Christianity's most widely known figures.

The modern secular holiday is based on the original Christian saint's feast day also thought to be the date of the saint's death. In 1737, Irish immigrants to the United States began observing the holiday publicly in Boston and held the first St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City in 1766.

Today, the tradition continues with people from all walks and heritages by wearing green, eating Irish food, and attending parades. St. Patrick's Day is bursting with folklore; from the shamrock to the leprechaun and to pinching those that are not wearing green.

7 Nations Celtic Club of Portsmouth Ohio is a non-profit, non-sectarian, and non-partisan corporation organized exclusively for social, charitable, and educational purposes. All members of the organization are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their participation. Our goal is to celebrate, promote and preserve our common Celtic inheritance. One way we plan to do this is by organizing the first ever Portsmouth Ohio Saint Patrick's Day Parade and working to make the parade an annual event. We are also working to develop an Annual Celtic Festival to take place in Scioto County. It is our goal to hold educational and entertainment events highlighting Celtic Culture throughout the year.

Interested in joining?

There are 2 ways to participate if you are interested.

1. Become a member

Being a "member" means that you will actually become a member of the Board of Directors of our non-profit corporation. All it takes is a payment of the small annual membership of $12 for individuals, $20 for households, and showing up at meetings. We hope you participate and have fun!

2. If you have less free time, simply volunteer for an event!

We plan to hold several special annual events, as described in the "Event Schedule".  We are always looking for volunteers to help out. If you are interested in joining the club or assisting in an event, please fill out the online form in the "Get Involved" section, or stop by Port City Cafe and Pub and pick-up a brochure.

When filling out the online form we would appreciate you responding to the following questions in the "Comments" section... "Are you willing to assist during a special event, if so which event?" - "What special interests or talents do you have that you would be willing to share?" - "Are you interested in participating in music sessions?" - "Do you play and instrument, or sing?"
